AMMONIUM LACTATE

Description

Ammonium lactate is a potent skincare ingredient that combines lactic acid, an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), with ammonium hydroxide. This compound is widely used in dermatological formulations for its dual action as a humectant and exfoliant. The lactic acid component promotes gentle exfoliation of dead skin cells, enhancing skin renewal and texture improvement. Simultaneously, the ammonium ion helps maintain the pH balance and increases the ingredient's moisturizing capabilities.

Typically found in concentrations ranging from 5% to 12%, ammonium lactate is particularly effective in treating conditions such as xerosis, ichthyosis, and keratosis pilaris. It works by increasing skin hydration, reducing scaling, and improving barrier function. The ingredient also demonstrates mild antimicrobial properties, which can be beneficial in managing acne-prone skin.

Ammonium lactate's ability to increase skin cell turnover makes it valuable for addressing hyperpigmentation and fine lines. However, it may increase sun sensitivity, so concurrent use of sunscreen is advised. While generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience mild irritation, especially at higher concentrations.
