DESCRIPTION
What It Does: Provides uv absorption at 300-320 nm from the furanocoumarin extended conjugated chromophore, anti-inflammatory activity from nf-kb iฮบb kinase inhibition, and antioxidant protection from the phenolic coumarin radical scavenging.
Why It's Used: Furanocoumarins provide dual uv absorption and anti-inflammatory activity from the same extended aromatic chromophore โ the uv-absorbing electrons that provide photoprotection also provide the electron density for anti-inflammatory radical-scavenging and enzyme inhibition.
How It Works: The furanocoumarin pi-system (benzene fused with pyranone fused with furan) absorbs uva at 300-320 nm via extended pi-pi* transition. the same electron-rich chromophore inhibits iฮบb kinase through pi-stacking and electrophilic interaction with the atp binding site. photoreactivity note: at high concentrations, psoralens (linear furanocoumarins) can cause phototoxicity.
