AHA
Description
Lactic Acid (LA) is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from milk sugars, commonly used in skincare formulations for its exfoliating and hydrating properties. This water-soluble acid has a larger molecular size compared to other AHAs, allowing for gentler exfoliation and reduced irritation potential. LA works by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover and revealing smoother, more radiant skin underneath.
At concentrations between 5-10%, LA effectively addresses various skin concerns, including uneven texture, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation. It also possesses humectant properties, attracting moisture to the skin and improving hydration levels. LA has been shown to stimulate collagen production, enhancing skin firmness and elasticity over time.
Unlike some other AHAs, LA demonstrates antimicrobial properties, making it beneficial for acne-prone skin. It can help regulate sebum production and unclog pores, reducing the occurrence of breakouts. LA is generally well-tolerated by most skin types, including sensitive skin, when used at appropriate concentrations and frequencies. However, as with all AHAs, it may increase sun sensitivity, necessitating the use of broad-spectrum sunscreen during daytime hours.
