ACRYLONITRILE/BUTADIENE/STYRENE COPOLYMER

Description

Acrylonitrile/Butadiene/Styrene Copolymer (ABS) is a synthetic thermoplastic polymer widely used in cosmetic and skincare formulations. This versatile ingredient is composed of three monomers: acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene, each contributing unique properties to the final copolymer. ABS is valued for its excellent impact resistance, toughness, and chemical stability.

In skincare applications, ABS primarily functions as a film-forming agent and texture enhancer. It creates a smooth, even surface on the skin, helping to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The copolymer also aids in the uniform distribution of other active ingredients within a formulation.

ABS is particularly effective in long-wearing makeup products, such as foundations and mascaras, where it provides durability and water resistance. Its film-forming properties also make it useful in sunscreens, helping to create a protective barrier on the skin.

While generally considered safe for topical use, ABS is non-biodegradable and may raise environmental concerns. Formulators should consider this aspect when developing eco-friendly products. Despite its synthetic nature, ABS is non-comedogenic and unlikely to cause skin irritation in most individuals.
