3-(O-ETHYLPHENYL)-2,2-DIMETHYLPROPIONALDEHYDE
Description
3-(O-ETHYLPHENYL)-2,2-DIMETHYLPROPIONALDEHYDE, also known by its trade name Lilial, is a synthetic aromatic aldehyde commonly used in the fragrance industry and personal care products. This colorless to pale yellow liquid has a floral scent reminiscent of lily of the valley, making it a popular choice in perfumes and fragranced skincare formulations.
In skincare, Lilial functions primarily as a fragrance ingredient, imparting a pleasant scent to products. However, its use has become controversial due to potential safety concerns. The European Union has banned Lilial in cosmetic products as of March 2022, citing its classification as a Category 1B reproductive toxicant.
Lilial can potentially cause skin sensitization and allergic reactions in some individuals. It has also been associated with endocrine disruption and reproductive toxicity in animal studies. As a result, many formulators are now seeking alternatives to Lilial in their product development.
When present in skincare formulations, Lilial is typically used in low concentrations, usually below 1%. Despite its fragrance properties, it does not offer significant skincare benefits beyond scent enhancement.
