MENTHA PULEGIUM OIL

Description

Mentha pulegium oil, commonly known as pennyroyal oil, is a potent essential oil derived from the Mentha pulegium plant, a member of the mint family. This highly concentrated oil is known for its strong, minty aroma and has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. However, its use in modern skincare and cosmetic formulations is limited due to safety concerns.

The oil contains high levels of pulegone, a monoterpene ketone, which gives it its characteristic scent and potential therapeutic properties. While it has been historically used for its purported antibacterial, antifungal, and insect-repelling qualities, scientific evidence supporting these benefits in skincare is limited.

It's crucial to note that Mentha pulegium oil is considered toxic when ingested or applied topically in high concentrations. Its use is restricted or prohibited in many countries due to potential liver toxicity and other adverse effects. In cosmetic formulations, if used at all, it must be in extremely low concentrations and under strict regulatory guidelines.

Given its potential risks, alternative mint oils like peppermint or spearmint are often preferred in skincare products for their safer profiles and similar aromatic properties.
