Maltose

Description

Maltose, a disaccharide composed of two glucose molecules linked by an α(1→4) glycosidic bond, is a versatile ingredient in skincare formulations. This naturally occurring sugar is derived from the breakdown of starch and is commonly found in various plant sources. In skincare, maltose functions as a humectant and moisturizing agent, attracting and retaining water in the skin's upper layers.

The molecular structure of maltose allows it to form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, effectively hydrating the skin and improving its moisture content. This hydration effect can lead to improved skin elasticity and a smoother appearance. Maltose also exhibits mild exfoliating properties, gently removing dead skin cells and promoting cellular turnover.

As a non-irritating and skin-compatible ingredient, maltose is suitable for various skin types, including sensitive skin. It can be incorporated into a wide range of skincare products, such as moisturizers, serums, and masks. Additionally, maltose may enhance the delivery of other active ingredients, potentially improving their efficacy. While not as potent as some other humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid, maltose provides a gentle, natural alternative for maintaining skin hydration and overall health.
