Maltodextrin

Description

Maltodextrin is a versatile polysaccharide derived from starch, commonly used in skincare and cosmetic formulations. This white, odorless powder is produced through partial hydrolysis of corn, potato, or wheat starch. Its molecular structure consists of D-glucose units linked by α-(1,4) and α-(1,6) glycosidic bonds, with a dextrose equivalent (DE) ranging from 3 to 20.

In skincare, maltodextrin functions as a texturizing agent, thickener, and stabilizer. It enhances the viscosity and spreadability of creams and lotions, contributing to a smooth, luxurious feel. Maltodextrin also acts as a mild humectant, attracting and retaining moisture in the skin, which can help improve hydration levels.

This ingredient is particularly useful in powdered skincare products, where it serves as a carrier for active ingredients and helps prevent caking. Maltodextrin's film-forming properties can create a temporary barrier on the skin, potentially reducing transepidermal water loss.

While generally considered safe for topical use, individuals with gluten sensitivities should be cautious, as some maltodextrin sources may contain trace amounts of gluten. Its low irritation potential makes it suitable for various skin types, including sensitive skin.
