MAGNESIUM LAURETH SULFATE
Description
Magnesium Laureth Sulfate (MLS) is a synthetic surfactant commonly used in personal care products and cosmetic formulations. This water-soluble compound is derived from lauryl alcohol and is closely related to Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS), but with magnesium as the counterion instead of sodium.
MLS functions primarily as a cleansing agent, emulsifier, and foaming agent. It effectively removes dirt, oil, and other impurities from the skin and hair by reducing surface tension between water and oils. Compared to SLS, MLS is generally considered milder and less likely to cause skin irritation, making it suitable for use in products designed for sensitive skin.
In skincare formulations, MLS contributes to the creation of rich lather and helps to stabilize foam. It also aids in the even distribution of other ingredients throughout the product. The concentration of MLS in personal care items typically ranges from 0.5% to 5%, depending on the specific application and desired effects.
While MLS is generally well-tolerated, individuals with extremely sensitive skin may still experience mild irritation. As with any surfactant, prolonged exposure can potentially disrupt the skin's natural barrier function, so it's often combined with moisturizing ingredients in product formulations to mitigate this effect.
