MAFENIDE HCL

Description

Mafenide HCl, also known as mafenide hydrochloride, is a potent topical antimicrobial agent primarily used in the treatment of severe burns and wound infections. This synthetic sulfonamide compound works by inhibiting bacterial growth through interference with folic acid synthesis. Its unique ability to penetrate eschar (dead tissue) on burn wounds makes it particularly effective against gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Mafenide HCl is typically formulated as a 5% water-soluble cream or solution. When applied to burn wounds, it creates an acidic environment that inhibits bacterial proliferation. This ingredient is known for its rapid absorption and penetration into burn eschar, reaching deeper layers of damaged tissue where other topical antibiotics may not effectively penetrate.

While highly effective, Mafenide HCl can cause metabolic acidosis due to systemic absorption, particularly when used on large surface areas. It may also cause local skin irritation and allergic reactions in some patients. The use of Mafenide HCl requires careful monitoring and should be balanced against its significant benefits in preventing life-threatening burn wound sepsis. Its application is typically limited to severe burns and is often used in conjunction with other systemic antibiotics in hospital settings.
