LINALOOL
Description
Linalool is a naturally occurring terpene alcohol found in many essential oils, including lavender, bergamot, and coriander. This versatile compound is widely used in skincare formulations due to its pleasant floral scent and potential therapeutic properties. Linalool exhibits antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, making it beneficial for addressing various skin concerns.
In skincare products, linalool functions primarily as a fragrance ingredient and skin-conditioning agent. Its soothing properties may help calm irritated skin and reduce redness. Some studies suggest that linalool possesses antioxidant capabilities, potentially protecting the skin from free radical damage and environmental stressors.
While generally considered safe for topical use, linalool can cause skin sensitization in some individuals, particularly when oxidized. Proper formulation and storage are crucial to maintain its stability and minimize the risk of adverse reactions. Linalool is often used in concentrations ranging from 0.001% to 0.5% in leave-on products and up to 2% in rinse-off formulations.
As with any fragrant ingredient, patch testing is recommended for those with sensitive skin or a history of allergic reactions to botanical extracts.
