Licorice Extract
Description
Licorice extract, derived from the root of the Glycyrrhiza glabra plant, is a potent skincare ingredient known for its multifaceted benefits. Its primary active compound, glabridin, exhibits significant skin-brightening properties by inhibiting tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for melanin production. This makes licorice extract particularly effective in addressing hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and uneven skin tone.
Beyond its brightening capabilities, licorice extract possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It helps soothe irritated skin, reduce redness, and calm conditions like eczema and rosacea. The extract's antioxidant content protects skin cells from free radical damage, potentially slowing the signs of aging.
Licorice extract also contains liquiritin, which aids in the even distribution of melanin in the skin, further enhancing its skin-evening effects. Additionally, it has been shown to have mild antimicrobial properties, which can be beneficial in managing acne-prone skin.
When formulating with licorice extract, it's typically used in concentrations of 0.5% to 2%. It's generally well-tolerated by most skin types, making it a versatile ingredient in various skincare products, from serums and moisturizers to targeted treatments for hyperpigmentation.
