LEVAN
Description
Levan is a naturally occurring polysaccharide composed of fructose units linked by β-(2,6) glycosidic bonds. This unique carbohydrate is synthesized by various microorganisms, including certain bacteria and yeasts, through the action of enzymes called levansucrases. Levan's molecular structure grants it exceptional properties that make it valuable in skincare formulations.
In cosmetic applications, levan functions as a potent moisturizer and film-forming agent. It forms a protective barrier on the skin's surface, helping to reduce transepidermal water loss and maintain optimal hydration levels. This polysaccharide also exhibits antioxidant properties, potentially shielding the skin from oxidative stress and environmental damage.
Levan's biocompatibility and non-toxicity make it suitable for sensitive skin types. Its high molecular weight contributes to its ability to create a smooth, supple feel when applied topically. Additionally, levan has shown promise in promoting collagen synthesis and enhancing skin elasticity, which may contribute to anti-aging effects.
In skincare formulations, levan is often incorporated into serums, moisturizers, and masks at concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 3%. Its stability across a wide pH range and compatibility with various cosmetic ingredients further enhance its versatility in product development.
