LAURETH-40

Description

Laureth-40 is a versatile synthetic ingredient widely used in cosmetic and personal care formulations. It functions primarily as an emulsifier, surfactant, and solubilizer, facilitating the mixing of oil and water-based components in various skincare and haircare products. This polyethylene glycol ether of lauryl alcohol is characterized by its long ethylene oxide chain, which contributes to its high hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) value.

In skincare formulations, Laureth-40 helps create stable emulsions and improves the texture and spreadability of products. It's particularly effective in cleansing formulations, where it aids in removing dirt, oil, and makeup from the skin's surface. The ingredient also acts as a mild surfactant, reducing surface tension and enhancing the foaming properties of cleansers and shampoos.

Laureth-40 is generally well-tolerated by most skin types and is considered to have low irritation potential. However, as with any ingredient, some individuals may experience sensitivity. Its solubilizing properties make it valuable in incorporating fragrances and essential oils into water-based products. While not occlusive, Laureth-40 can contribute to a product's moisturizing effects by helping to disperse emollients evenly across the skin.
