LAURETH-25
Description
Laureth-25 is a polyethylene glycol ether of lauryl alcohol, functioning primarily as an emulsifier and surfactant in skincare and cosmetic formulations. This synthetic ingredient is derived from ethoxylated lauryl alcohol and is characterized by its ability to reduce surface tension between oil and water phases, facilitating the creation of stable emulsions.
In skincare products, Laureth-25 plays a crucial role in enhancing the texture and consistency of creams, lotions, and cleansers. Its emulsifying properties allow for the uniform dispersion of active ingredients throughout the product, ensuring even distribution upon application. Additionally, Laureth-25 acts as a mild detergent, aiding in the removal of dirt and oil from the skin's surface without causing excessive dryness.
The molecule's structure includes a hydrophilic (water-loving) head and a lipophilic (oil-loving) tail, making it effective at bridging the gap between water-based and oil-based components in formulations. This characteristic also contributes to its function as a solubilizer, helping to incorporate oil-soluble ingredients into water-based products.
While generally considered safe for use in cosmetics, individuals with sensitive skin should perform patch tests before widespread application, as with any synthetic ingredient.
