HYDROCHLOROFLUOROCARBON 142B
Description
Hydrochlorofluorocarbon 142B, also known as HCFC-142b or 1-chloro-1,1-difluoroethane, is a synthetic compound primarily used as a refrigerant and propellant in various industrial applications. In the context of skincare and cosmetic formulations, this ingredient has limited use due to environmental concerns and regulatory restrictions. HCFC-142b is a colorless, non-flammable gas at room temperature with a slight ethereal odor. Its molecular formula is CH3CF2Cl, and it has a boiling point of -9.2°C (15.4°F).
While historically employed in some aerosol products, HCFC-142b has been phased out in many countries due to its ozone-depleting potential and contribution to global warming. The Montreal Protocol, an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer, has mandated the gradual elimination of HCFCs, including HCFC-142b. As a result, its use in cosmetic and skincare formulations is now extremely rare and generally discouraged.
Alternative propellants and delivery systems, such as hydrocarbon propellants, compressed gases, or pump sprays, are now preferred in the skincare industry. These alternatives offer similar functionality without the environmental concerns associated with HCFC-142b.
