ETHYLHEXYL GALLATE
Description
ETHYLHEXYL GALLATE is a potent antioxidant and skin-conditioning agent widely used in cosmetic and skincare formulations. This synthetic ester is derived from gallic acid and 2-ethylhexanol, combining the protective properties of gallic acid with improved stability and skin penetration.
As a free radical scavenger, ethylhexyl gallate helps neutralize oxidative stress, protecting skin cells from environmental damage and premature aging. Its antioxidant activity is particularly effective against lipid peroxidation, making it valuable in preserving the integrity of skin barrier lipids.
In addition to its protective role, ethylhexyl gallate exhibits antimicrobial properties, contributing to the preservation of cosmetic products. It also demonstrates mild skin-lightening effects by inhibiting tyrosinase activity, potentially aiding in the reduction of hyperpigmentation.
Ethylhexyl gallate is generally well-tolerated and suitable for various skin types. Its efficacy is maintained at low concentrations, typically ranging from 0.05% to 0.5% in formulations. This ingredient synergizes well with other antioxidants, enhancing overall product stability and skin benefits. Its oil-soluble nature makes it particularly useful in emulsions and anhydrous formulations.
