ERYTHORBIC ACID

Description

Erythorbic acid, also known as D-isoascorbic acid or D-araboascorbic acid, is a stereoisomer of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) commonly used in skincare formulations. This water-soluble antioxidant compound shares many chemical properties with vitamin C but exhibits lower biological activity. In skincare, erythorbic acid primarily functions as a potent antioxidant and preservative.

The ingredient effectively neutralizes free radicals, helping to protect the skin from oxidative stress and environmental damage. It also plays a crucial role in stabilizing formulations by preventing color changes and maintaining product efficacy over time. Erythorbic acid has mild exfoliating properties, which can contribute to improved skin texture and tone.

While not as extensively studied as ascorbic acid for skincare benefits, erythorbic acid has demonstrated potential in promoting collagen synthesis and reducing melanin production, albeit to a lesser extent than its isomer. Its stability in formulations often makes it a preferred choice for manufacturers seeking long-lasting antioxidant effects in their products.

Erythorbic acid is generally well-tolerated by most skin types and is considered safe for use in cosmetic formulations at concentrations typically ranging from 0.5% to 2%.
