ERIODICTYOL
Description
Eriodictyol is a naturally occurring flavonoid found in various plants, particularly in yerba santa (Eriodictyon californicum) and citrus fruits. This potent antioxidant compound belongs to the flavanone subclass and has gained attention in skincare for its potential therapeutic benefits.
Structurally similar to hesperidin and naringenin, eriodictyol exhibits strong free radical scavenging properties, helping to neutralize oxidative stress and protect skin cells from environmental damage. Research indicates that eriodictyol may inhibit melanogenesis, potentially aiding in the reduction of hyperpigmentation and promoting a more even skin tone.
In addition to its antioxidant effects, eriodictyol demonstrates anti-inflammatory properties, which may help soothe irritated skin and reduce redness. Some studies suggest it may also have photoprotective qualities, offering an additional layer of defense against UV-induced skin damage when used in conjunction with sunscreens.
Eriodictyol's molecular structure allows for relatively good skin penetration, enhancing its efficacy in topical formulations. While more research is needed to fully understand its long-term effects and optimal concentrations in skincare products, eriodictyol shows promise as a multifunctional ingredient for addressing various skin concerns.
