ENTEROCOCCUS FAECALIS
Description
Enterococcus faecalis is a gram-positive, commensal bacterium naturally found in the human gut microbiome. In recent years, it has gained attention in the skincare industry for its potential probiotic properties. When applied topically, E. faecalis may help support the skin's natural microbiome, potentially improving barrier function and overall skin health.
This bacterium produces antimicrobial peptides called bacteriocins, which can inhibit the growth of harmful pathogens on the skin. E. faecalis has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, potentially reducing redness and irritation associated with various skin conditions. Some studies suggest it may help in managing acne by competing with acne-causing bacteria.
In skincare formulations, E. faecalis is often used in fermented ingredients or as part of probiotic complexes. It's typically incorporated into serums, creams, and masks targeting skin microbiome balance. While promising, more research is needed to fully understand its long-term effects and optimal concentration in skincare products. As with any probiotic ingredient, proper formulation and preservation are crucial to maintain its efficacy and safety in cosmetic applications.
