Ensulizole
Description
Ensulizole, also known as phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid, is a water-soluble organic compound widely used in sunscreen formulations. This UVB filter provides effective protection against short-wave ultraviolet radiation, helping to prevent sunburn and reduce the risk of skin cancer. Unlike many other sunscreen agents, ensulizole's unique chemical structure allows it to remain stable in aqueous solutions, making it an ideal ingredient for lightweight, non-greasy sunscreen products.
With a maximum approved concentration of 4% in the United States and 8% in the European Union, ensulizole is often combined with other UV filters to achieve broad-spectrum protection. Its ability to absorb UVB rays without significant penetration into the skin minimizes the potential for irritation, making it suitable for sensitive skin types. Ensulizole's water-solubility also contributes to its non-comedogenic properties, reducing the likelihood of clogged pores.
In addition to its primary function as a UV filter, ensulizole can enhance the photostability of other sunscreen ingredients, particularly avobenzone, thereby improving the overall efficacy of sunscreen formulations. Its compatibility with various cosmetic ingredients allows for versatile use in daily moisturizers, facial sunscreens, and other skincare products designed for sun protection.
