DODOXYNOL-9
Description
Dodoxynol-9, also known as nonoxynol-9, is a nonionic surfactant primarily used in personal care products, including some haircare formulations. This synthetic compound belongs to the family of nonylphenol ethoxylates and functions as an emulsifier and solubilizer. In haircare applications, dodoxynol-9 helps to stabilize formulations by reducing surface tension between oil and water-based ingredients, allowing for better mixing and a more uniform product.
The ingredient's molecular structure consists of a hydrophobic nonylphenol group and a hydrophilic polyethylene oxide chain, giving it both oil and water-soluble properties. This dual nature makes it effective in dispersing oils and other hydrophobic substances in aqueous solutions. In shampoos and conditioners, dodoxynol-9 can contribute to improved lathering and cleansing performance.
While dodoxynol-9 has been used in various personal care products, it's important to note that its use has become less common due to potential environmental concerns. Some regions have restricted or banned its use in certain applications. Formulators should consider alternative surfactants that offer similar benefits with improved environmental profiles when developing new haircare products.
