DISTEAROYLETHYL DIMONIUM CHLORIDE
Description
Distearoylethyl dimonium chloride is a cationic surfactant and conditioning agent widely used in personal care products, particularly hair conditioners and skin care formulations. This quaternary ammonium compound is derived from stearic acid and exhibits excellent compatibility with various cosmetic ingredients.
The molecule consists of a positively charged nitrogen atom bonded to two long-chain fatty acid derivatives, providing both hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties. This structure allows distearoylethyl dimonium chloride to effectively adsorb onto negatively charged surfaces such as hair and skin, forming a protective film that enhances smoothness and manageability.
In hair care applications, it reduces static electricity, improves wet and dry combing, and increases shine. For skin care, it acts as an emollient, helping to soften and smooth the skin's surface. The ingredient also demonstrates antimicrobial properties, contributing to product preservation.
Distearoylethyl dimonium chloride is typically used at concentrations between 0.5% to 5% in formulations. It is generally considered safe for cosmetic use when applied as directed, though individuals with sensitive skin may experience mild irritation. As with any cosmetic ingredient, patch testing is recommended for those with known sensitivities.
