Disodium EDTA

Description

Disodium EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt) is a versatile chelating agent widely used in skincare and cosmetic formulations. This synthetic compound effectively binds metal ions, particularly calcium and magnesium, which can contribute to product instability and reduced efficacy. In skincare, Disodium EDTA serves multiple purposes, primarily as a preservative enhancer and antioxidant synergist. It helps prevent rancidity and color changes in formulations by sequestering metal ions that catalyze oxidation reactions. This ingredient also improves the stability and performance of other preservatives, allowing for lower concentrations of antimicrobial agents in products. Disodium EDTA can enhance the penetration of certain active ingredients by softening water and reducing the interference of hard water minerals with surfactants. Typically used at concentrations between 0.05% to 0.15%, it is considered safe for most skin types when properly formulated. While not an active ingredient for direct skin benefits, Disodium EDTA plays a crucial role in maintaining product integrity, prolonging shelf life, and ensuring consistent performance of skincare formulations. Its ability to improve product stability makes it a valuable component in a wide range of cosmetic products.
