DIMETHYLOL GLYCOL

Description

DIMETHYLOL GLYCOL, also known as 1,3-Dimethylol-5,5-dimethylhydantoin or DMDM Hydantoin, is a synthetic preservative widely used in cosmetics and personal care products. This water-soluble compound acts as a formaldehyde donor, releasing small amounts of formaldehyde over time to prevent microbial growth and extend product shelf life.

The ingredient is effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria, yeasts, and molds, making it valuable in water-based formulations such as shampoos, lotions, and creams. DIMETHYLOL GLYCOL typically functions at low concentrations, usually between 0.1% to 0.6%, depending on the product type and desired preservation level.

While DIMETHYLOL GLYCOL is considered safe for use in cosmetics by regulatory bodies, including the FDA and EU Cosmetics Regulation, it may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. The gradual release of formaldehyde has raised some concerns, as formaldehyde is a known irritant and potential carcinogen at high levels of exposure.

Formulators often choose DIMETHYLOL GLYCOL for its efficacy, compatibility with other ingredients, and cost-effectiveness. However, growing consumer demand for "preservative-free" or "natural" products has led to increased exploration of alternative preservation systems in recent years.
